About Capitol Police

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety Capitol Police is a state-level law enforcement agency tasked with protecting the Capitol Complex Improvement District (CCID) and surrounding areas of Jackson. Unlike the Jackson Police Department (which serves the entire city) or the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department (which provides countywide services and operates the jail), Capitol Police focuses specifically on state property and designated districts within the capital city.

Jurisdiction & Districts

Capitol Police patrols the Capitol Complex Improvement District (CCID), which includes:

  • The State Capitol and surrounding government buildings

  • Major corridors extending through downtown and midtown Jackson

  • Certain residential and business areas adjacent to the Capitol district

This distinct jurisdiction means residents or businesses inside the CCID may interact directly with Capitol Police, while those outside the district remain under the primary jurisdiction of JPD or the Sheriff’s Department.

Working Alongside Other Agencies

Capitol Police works in coordination with:

  • Jackson Police Department (JPD) – providing law enforcement citywide.

  • Hinds County Sheriff’s Department – countywide services, jail operations, and court security.

  • State and Federal Agencies – supporting large-scale events, investigations, and public safety efforts.

This year, the City of Jackson is excited to host one big National Night Out event and you’re invited! Join us on Tuesday, September 30, at Veterans Memorial Stadium for a citywide evening of community, connection, and fun.
